This session will provide the audience with information and materials to plan and host a flash mob. In 2017, Saint Louis Public Schools in collaboration with BJC School Outreach and Youth Development and the City of St. Louis Department of Health engaged 70 schools and 52,000 students in its 3rd Annual state-wide dancing event, the Let’s Move! Move Your Body Flash Mob. Flash mobs, in the school setting, can be used as an approach to increase student activity minutes while showing students that it can be fun to be active. Engaging students in dancing can be done in and out of PE, can be brought into the classroom as a brain break activity, and may even be used to cover certain GLEs. This type of activity is not strictly about exercise, but an opportunity to have fun moving while striving for 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Dancing can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities. Time, resources (e.g., money and people), and collaboration with key stakeholders is instrumental in hosting a flash mob. The first step is to solicit a team of stakeholders (both within your school and your community) who share your same vision and mission. Once your team is established, your members can collaborate on your action plan for flash mob logistics, as well as sharing materials to all interested participants. Your team is your key to engaging the media and sharing details regarding your event. This session will provide examples of how a flash mob has been coordinated in the past. All participants will be provided with resources to allow him/her to begin planning a flash mob in his/her district.
